McQuillan leads Canadian group in Sony Open

The Canadian trio playing the Sony Open in Hawaii yesterday finished with mixed results during the first round of the rain-delayed event.

The first golfer from Eastern Ontario to make the PGA Tour, Kingston’s Matt McQuillan, did the best by coming in at -2 on the par 70, 7,044 yard Waialae Country Club. McQuillan is T24.

David Hearn of Brantford carded a +1, 71 to sit T85 and Vernon’s Chris Baryla was +3 to head into the second round T113 in the $5.5 million tournament.

Stuart Appleby, famous for his fast January starts on the PGA Tour, leads the 144-player field after shooting a -6, 64.

Appleby has a one-shot lead over a group of nine golfers that includes Matt Kuchar and Justin Rose.

Appleby fired a terrific 30 on the back nine. The highlights were a chip-in on the 12th hole, a holed five-iron for eagle on 16 and he sank a long birdie putt on 17.
