Paced by the 18 points of starting guard Korey Billbury, the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles downed the McNeese State Cowboys by the score of 66-62 in the second game of the Southland Conference men’s basketball tournament in the Houston suburbs of Katy, Texas on Wednesday, March 12, 2014.
The 6-3, red shirt sophomore from Tulsa, Oklahoma shot 6-of-12 from the field including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc and 3-of-7 from the line.
The Golden Eagles led 28-24 at the half and increased that lead to 15 points with 9:34 remaining in the game.
The game came down to shooting, with Oral Roberts connecting on 24-of-57 (42.1%) from the field, while the Cowboys could only manage 28.1% from the field (18-of-64).
For McNeese, Ledrick Eackles scored 28 points, including five three-pointers and was 11-of-13 from the free throw line.
Billbury also pulled down 12 rebounds; 10 of them on defense, to lead the Golden Eagles.
With his 18 points and 12 rebounds, Billbury received the fourth double-double of his career.
Oral Roberts also dominated the Cowboys in the paint, scoring 30 points against 14 for McNeese.
The Eagles also led in second chance point, 13-8 and in take-a-ways, 10-9.
With the loss, McNeese State heads back to Lake Charles with a 11-20 record while Oral Roberts raised its record to 17-15 and will face No. 3 Sam Houston State on Thursday, March 13, 2014, with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off at the Merrell Center.
