According to CBC Sports, Mark McMorris of Regina, Saskatchewan has won Canada's first medal at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

McMorris won a bronze medal in the men's slopestyle snowboarding competition after posting a score of 88.75 points. McMorris touched down on his second jump, but had an excellent third and final jump to post a solid result.

McMorris was also facing some significant adversity because he was competing with a broken rib which he suffered at the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado in January.

American Sage Kotsenburg won the gold medal with a score of 93.5 points and Staale Sandbech of Norway won the silver medal with a score of 91.75 points.

Men's slopestyle snowboarding which was making its debut at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, was the first Olympic event in Sochi where medals were decided.

On Sunday, Spencer O'Brien of Courtenay, British Columbia will be competing in the women's slopestyle snowboarding final. O'Brien placed in third place in heat one of Thursday's qualification round.
