According to the Sochi 2014 website on Monday, team Canada has won its first gold medal at the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi.

Brian McKeever of Calgary, who was suffering from a serious virus a week ago, won a gold medal in the men's 20 kilometre cross country skiing event for the visually impaired.

McKeever posted a time of 52:37.1. He was a full minute faster than silver medalist Stanislav Chokhlaev of Russia (53:43.3) and almost four minutes faster than bronze medalist Zebastien Modin of Sweden (56:34.9).

For McKeever, it is his eighth gold medal at the Paralympic Winter Games. He won two gold medals each at the 2002 Paralympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City and the 2006 Paralympic Winter Games in Turin and three gold medals at the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver. It is also his 11th Paralympic Winter Games medal.

In wheelchair curling, team Canada split their two games on Monday. Canada thumped the United States 7-2, but then were upset by Norway 8-6 later in the day. Team Canada's record is now 4-1 and are tied with Great Britain and Russia for first place.

Canada now has six medals (one gold, two silver and three bronze) and sit in third place in the overall medal standings behind Russia at 24 medals and the Ukraine at seven medals.
