McKeever wins IPC World Cup race in Canmore

According to the Canadian Press, Brian McKeever of Calgary, Alberta has won an International Paralympic Committee World Cup race in Canmore, Alberta (an hour west of Calgary) on Monday for cross country skiers who are visibly blind.

McKeever won the men's 10km race with a time 26:21.1. Russia won silver and bronze with Stanislav Chokhlaev placing second with a time of 26:45.2 and Mikolay Polukhin placing third with a time of 27:02.0.

The Russians meawhile swept the podium in the men's 10 km cross country skiing standing division. Sergey Lapkin won the gold medal, Rushan Minnegulov won the silver medal, and Vladimir Kononov won the bronze medal.

Russians also swept the medal standings in the men's 10km sit skiing competition, with Grigory Murygin winning gold, Aliaksandr Davidovich of Russia winning silver and Irek Zaripov of Russia winning bronze. They also swept the medal standings in the women's 5km cross country skiing competition for the visually impaired with Iuliia Budaleeva winning gold, Elena Remizova winning silver and Mikhalina Lysova winning bronze.

Norway's Mariann Marthinsen won the gold medal in the women's 5km middle distance sitting competition to beat Russian silver medalist Marta Zaynullina and American bronze medalist Oksana Masters.

In the women's 5km standing class, Russia's Alena Kaufmann won the gold medal, followed by Japan's Shoko Ota and Japan's Momoko Dekijima.

The cross-country skiing races are in preparation for the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi.
