McKechnie Field, the spring training home of the Pittsburgh Pirates is receiving a thorough makeover this winter, with most of the work being performed by local companies. More than 80 percent of the businesses and total workers involved in the $10 million renovation of McKechnie Field are from the Tampa Bay area.
NDC Construction, located in Bradenton, is the construction manager for the project. Fawley Bryant Architects, Inc. with offices in Bradenton and Lakewood Ranch designed the project. Of the 39 businesses that have played a role in the renovation, 12 are from Manatee County, 11 are from Sarasota County, five are based in Pinellas County, and four are located in Hillsborough County.
Four additional Florida companies bring the total of in-state businesses used to 36. The total number of workers on the project to date is 224. In-state workers account for 95 percent of the total project work force, with 87 percent coming from the Tampa Bay Region, and 63 percent coming from businesses in Manatee and Sarasota counties.
Local companies have been involved in some of the most pivotal parts of the project. Wm F. McDonough Plumbing of Sarasota handled the extensive plumbing needs of the renovation, Duncan Seawall of Sarasota constructed the boardwalk that will provide fans with outfield seating for the first time, and All Steel Consultants of Palmetto was contracted for structural steel.
McKechnie Field has been the Spring Training home of the Pittsburgh Pirates since 1969. The Pirates’ High-A affiliate, the Bradenton Marauders, has played there each summer since 2010.
Originally built in 1923, McKechnie Field is the oldest Spring Training ballpark in the country.
