Showing either good-naturedness, or the good sense to strike while the iron is hot, 16-year-old U.S. women's gymnast McKayla Maroney has joined in on her own meme, “McKayla Maroney is not Impressed.”
The photo (above), which Maroney posted to Instagram on Saturday, shows Maroney and teammates Aly Raisman and Kyla Ross, with the caption “The pool is closed .. #notimpressed.” The image shows the three of them (Raisman, Ross, Maroney, right to left) with Maroney's now signature scowl.
As the 2012 Summer Olympics in London come to a close, we've seen several things become Internet memes. Maroney's meme was birthed after an image was published, showing Maroney at the women's vault medal ceremony, when she had an unhappy look and a distinctive facial expression.
Maroney had finished second in the vault, an event she had been favored to win, after falling on her signature second vault. During the medal ceremony, she was seen with a somewhat snarky expression, looking obviously upset.
[To be clear, Maroney is still going home with a gold medal, as a member of the U.S. women's gymnastics team.]
Since then, the meme (with the accompanying #notimpressed hashtag and requisite Tumblr blog) has taken off.
Images have been created showing Maroney not impressed by things such as baby pandas, the "Miracle on the Hudson," and the remake of "Total Recall" (though admittedly, not many were impressed by that).
The closing ceremonies of the 2012 Olympic Games begin at 3:00 p.m. EDT, and NBC has backtracked, and has said they will stream it. Although the Olympics are ending, though, we doubt the “McKayla Maroney is not Impressed" meme will end anytime soon.
