Some quick observations about the cuts. (Note: All seven members of the 2013 draft class made the team.)
Quarterbacks- Even though Greg McElroy was released with an injury I think the Jets were ready to move on from the Alabama quarterback. McElroy was never scared to make headlines with his opinions, and that is never a good thing for a fringe player. The emergence of Matt Simms solidified Greg's fate. As for the Jets keeping four quarterbacks (Sanchez, Smith, Simms, Harrell) one has to wonder about the health of Mark Sanchez. My guess is that the Jets are keeping Harrell around until Sanchez is fully recovered.
Wide receivers- It was great to see Ryan Spadola make the roster as the undrafted free agent had an excellent preseason. The questions come from the release of Braylon Edwards, Ben Obomanu, and Mohamed Massoquoi. The Jets are entering the season with a relatively unproven, inexperienced wide receiver group. Other than Santonio Holmes and Jeremy Kerley Gang Green has some serious question marks as Stephen Hill and Clyde Gates have yet to establish themselves as competent receivers. I would not be surprised to see the Jets add a veteran route runner to the mix.
Defensive line- I was a bit surprised that the Jets released Antonio Garay. The veteran adds some depth to the line defensive line, one where Kenrick Ellis has struggled to stay healthy. Leger Douzable had a solid camp so maybe the Jets are sticking with the youth movement philosophy.
Idzik's philosophy- Based on some of the cuts this preseason it appears that general manager John Idzik does not play favorites when it comes to veterans or players dealing with injuries. The release of guys like Stephen Peterman, Antonio Garay, Joe McKnight, and Braylon Edwards are some good examples of that. Idzik preaches competition and the only way to prove yourself is on the field.
