Two McDonald’s restaurants in the Houston area have slapped a ban on low riding pants by posting signage stating that patrons must “Pull your pants up or don’t come in. Try to have some decency and respect for others. No one wants to see your underwear.” The story, reported by Yahoo! News on Friday, states that the ‘no saggers’ pant rule does not apply to young children.
Responding to the news, a McDonald’s spokesperson said that individual McDonald's franchises are allowed to state the dress code they wish. The spokesperson emailed that it was the corporate understanding that the restaurants with the ‘no saggers’ rule did so to reflect what they feel is appropriate for their community business. The email also said that McDonalds continually strives to maintain a positive restaurant environment in which everyone feels valued and accepted.
Allegedly, the Houston area has more than 25 businesses – including the two McDonalds – that are trying to stop men from wearing pants that expose their underwear.
Other attempts in other locations – such as Wildwood, a New Jersey beach community – have been called racist for banning sagging pants as some people believe it is only a black persons’ fad.
