McDonald's offers free coffee, fires back at Taco Bell in the 'Waffle Taco War'

Yesterday, Taco Bell officially launched their new breakfast menu, which features everything from Cinnabon bites and traditional breakfast burritos, to the infamous waffle taco. Today, March 28, McDonald's announced that they will be offering free small coffees from March 31-April 13 during breakfast hours.

USAToday reports that this is a response to the new Taco Bell promotion which said that Ronald McDonald himself approved of the new breakfast items at Taco Bell. McDonald's usually does not offer free item promotions, so this new development in the emerging "Waffle Taco War" is a surprise.

McDonald's profits have been down from last year at this time, and the breakfast industry is a $50 billion business. It only makes sense that they are looking for a new way to promote, in addition to slowing down efforts by competitors. It will be interesting to see how Taco Bell responds, if at all. Until then I will have to make my way to Taco Bell for a waffle taco, then maybe head to McDonald's for some coffee.
