Mindy McCready reportedly shot her dog before killing herself according to the latest information. On Feb. 17, TMZ reported that McCready fired two shots at her home in Heber Springs, Ark. and the public now knows that the first shot took the life of her dog.
The sheriff's department released a statement that confirmed Mindy's suicide. It read in part, "Officers arrived on the scene at 3:58 PM and discovered the body of 37 year old Melinda Gayle McCready on the front porch of the residence at 1132 Fox Chase. Ms. McCready was pronounced dead at the scene from what appears to be a single self-inflicted gunshot wound (sic)." The report did not mention the dog, but sources tell TMZ that the animal's life was taken before the country singer's.
It is unknown why McCready shot her dog before herself, but her reasoning could have been simple. Perhaps she loved her dog so much that she wanted him to "go with her." Maybe she didn't want anything bad to happen to him after she was gone (like she didn't want him to be put in a shelter), so she took his life. There is also the possibility that the dog was old and/or suffering (not unlike Mindy) so she decided to give him peace.
When people commit suicide, you are more likely to hear that they took the life of another family member before killing themselves. Many people don't even want to think about what Mindy would have done if her two young sons had been with her. On one hand, she may not have shot herself, but on the other, things could have been much worse.
Perhaps McCready shot her dog before turning the gun on herself because she had two bullets. Who knows? Whatever her reasoning, the situation is very unfortunate all around.
