It was a hot and humid morning for the Annual McCormack 5K held on Sunday, August 21, 2011 in Lake Como, NJ.
As the runners gathered for the start in front of Bar Anticipation the heat from the sun could be felt and as the race wore on the humidity seemed to take its toll on many of the participants.
The course took the runners through the town of Lake como around the Lake Como and to the ocean front and around the lake on the Spring Lake side. From there it was a sprint to the finish on the side of Bar Anticipation.
Coming in first for the men was Jesse Bender of Conway, Pa in a time of 17:36. He was followed by Todd Briggs of Freehold in 18:23; Dan Lenahan of Wall in 18:53; Ken Kropac of Lake Como in 19:02 ansd Ravon McMullen of Brielle in 20:17.
For the women it was Tracy Campbell of Wall in 20:48 followed by Amapola Espinoza of Colts Neck in 23:05; Erin Folger of North Brunswick in 23:31; Melissa Bender of Pittsburgh, Pa in 23:40 and Veronica Luhn of Jackson in 24:18.
Holding the finish tape for the overall winner were JSRC members Maya and Nicholas Cifrodella of Brick.
Lake Como Mayor Mike Ryan was in attendance to lend support and organized a group of volunteers along the course through the town.
Reggie Hyde, proprieter of Bar A, was also a participant in the race and finished somewhere in the middle of the pack.
After the race runners were treated to a barbecue and refreshments. Awards were presented outside at Bar A.
The race was staged by the Jersey Shore Running Club and benefitted the Captain George McCormack Scholarship Fund.
