McCarty's Cove: Marquette Michigan's premier park
A short little site-seeing drive along the beautifully scenic Lakeshore Boulevard, just off of East Michigan Street sits one of Marquette Michigan's premier parks. McCarty's Cove is a quadruple
-threat site-seer's spot, considering McCarty's Cove close proximity to the US Coast Guard Station, the Marquette Maritime Museum, the Marquette Harbor Lighthouse and a beautiful stretch of beach I coined the Riviera Marquette.
With McCarty's Cove premier park status as does the parking which comes at a premium in terms of availability. It's a passive survival of the fittest, first come first served system. 20 spots including handicapped at best, and those that are able to obtain a spot, make a day of it. Don't be discouraged, simply heed my words. It's worth starting the day off early and making a day of it. All of the site-seeing spots mentioned above are all easily within walking distance. In fact, one you've stormed the beach and settled in, the Marquette Harbor Lighthouse is set-staged as your backdrop. All day scenery of crashing waves over small island-like rock groupings set in the foreground with the lighthouse prominently sitting atop an even greater rocky platform.
These island-like rocky groupings also act as diving platforms for more able-bodied swimmers that brave the cold water temperatures. The beach, as well as these rock groupings, are manned by certified lifeguards the City of Marquette provides. Always practice caution swimming in any body of water, especially Lake Superior.
Adjacent to the parking is a playground, a grassy knoll with picnic tables and benches that over-look the beach. There are well maintained vaulted toilets with diaper changing stations. Also adjacent to the parking is a sandy, fence lines path leading to the beach and where the lifeguard tower is situated, along with warning flag system that is also maintained, be lifeguards on duty or otherwise.
McCarty's Cove is simply one of the best parks the City of Marquette has to offer a tourist, an outdoor adventurist or site-seeing day tripper.
