After nine terms in office, New York is losing one of its greatest public servants.

Democrat Carolyn McCarthy, from Mineola, has announced recently that she will not seek re-election once her term ends. McCarthy, who has been battling cancer, will however remain an advocate of gun control.

Notable for a career in politics, as well as for continually fighting for gun control, McCarthy will undoubtedly leave behind a strong legacy that may be hard to follow.

It remains to be seen who will inherit her seat in congress.

McCarthy is a former nurse, who entered politics just after the shooting on the Long Island Railroad in 1993. Her husband was killed by gunman Colin Ferguson, and her son was wounded in the attack. Ferguson is now serving a lengthy prison sentence.

McCarthy became a staunch advocate against assault weapons, and a strong voice against gun violence, which sadly has remained prevalent in our society today.

All politics aside, McCarthy will be missed in Congress. For those who have followed her political career, and have admired her strength in the face of adversity, she will remain a profile in courage.
