McCabe's book store closing after 35 years

The sale signs are everywhere outside and inside, at McCabe & Company Booksellers on Lake Drive in Crestline. The slumping economy has hit independent booksellers particularly hard in recent years, and even some of the big chains such as Borders have shut down. In fact, Carol has kept the store running with her own money for some time now.

On March 31, 2014, McCabe's will close forever. In the meantime, hundreds of books and magazines are on sale for 20% up to 80% off.

This outlet has always welcomed local authors and hosted "Meet the Author" events where customers can get their books signed. In fact, local author and historian Rhea Frances Tetley often stops by on a Sunday just to sit and read, and to make herself available to chat with readers and sign their books.

One of the most charming features of has been the bookstore cat. Most recently, a Scottish Fold named Bibi made the store her home. Sadly, Bibi passed away last year.

Carol has decades of experience in the book business. After a long career as a buyer for Pickwick and B.Dalton, as well as Macy's in San Francisco, Carol McCabe bought a little bookstore called Bell, Book & Candle in April 1979. She renamed it McCabe & Company Booksellers, and business was so good at first that she was able purchase the two buildings on the lot and to add on a second story to the tiny structure. The bookstore occupies one building, and Cozy Cabins Realty occupies the other one.

She considers herself lucky to have worked doing things that she enjoys, as well as meeting many people and making friends. She still owns the building and plans to rent it out to another small business.

Sadly, the book business has been hit hard by a variety of changes in the marketplace, while many people no longer have much disposable income. However, this close-out sale makes a variety of books and magazines affordable. Hurry in and check it out before McCabe's is gone forever.

And check out the McCabe's page on Facebook.

The store is located on Lake Drive in Crestline, across the street from the post office and next door to the Ace Hardware Garden Center.
