In the song “MC Yogi’s Got Style,” the rapper praises the vegan and vegetarian lifestyle. In other songs, he raps about Gandhi, human rights, yoga and Hindu gods. This coming Friday, December 13, Portlanders can hear the trailblazing yogi rapper in person at the Alhambra Theater on SE Hawthorne. If you don’t mind some profanity mixed with your devotion, that is.
Ever since he released Elephant Power in 2008, MC Yogi has graced the stages of yoga festivals and blared from the speakers in yoga classes. His Pilgrimage album came out in 2012, and Mantras, Beats and Meditations is slated for a 2014 release.
In addition to hip hop, MC Yogi’s influences include reggae, dancehall, Bollywood and classical Indian music. World-famous Indian musicians have played on his albums.
MC Yogi is also – not surprisingly – a yoga teacher. He and his wife Amanda Giacomini own Yoga Toes Studios in Point Reyes, California. Friday’s event will include a yoga class before the concert. MC Yogi, Amanda Giacomini, Sianna Sherman and DJ Drez will co-teach the class. Doors open at 5:30. The concert at the Alhambra is scheduled for 8 to 9:30 PM. You can buy tickets for one or both events, though the yoga class will probably sell out.
