Mayweather's lack of credibility haunting former boxing king

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. on May 18, 2009 (AP/Mark Avery)

Editorial:

The postponement of the Mayweather vs. Marquez fight, originally scheduled for July 18th in Las Vegas, presents boxing fans and observers with more questions than answers. The reported rib injury to Floyd Mayweather, Jr. is pushing back the fight to a proposed September date and could be Mayweather's only fight pencilled in for 2009. (The fighter had originally expressed his intentions of having two bouts for the year.)

Questions among fight fans

1. How did the injury occur? Was it caused by strenuous exercises or did the injury occur during a sparring session? If the latter transpired, who inflicted the injury?

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, whose company represents Juan Manuel Marquez, is eagerly anticipating the doctor's report which is slated to come out this week, which would affect the bout's new timetable. Due to the high dollar contracts and heavy planning involved, such third-party and (presumably) objective attestations are critical for both sides. Spending one's time and energies on lawsuits involving breach of contract is a non-value-added activity in the grand scheme of things.

2. Given the poor ticket sales for the originally scheduled July 18th fight, how does Mayweather Promotions propose to take corrective measures to prevent the same lackluster promotional campaign from happening again? Does this mean that Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) will play an increasing role to sell the fight? Given their access, power to attract sponsors, multi-channel approach, and most importantly, relationships and good rapport with a variety of players, GBP is many times more positioned to add value and attraction to the fight than Mayweather's camp which has earned a bad rep from the press and similar outfits like Top Rank.

3. A legitimate injury may have occured, and an objective doctor's diagnosis should confirm it. However, how much damage has the incident inflicted on Mayweather's goodwill with the public? In other words, amongst Mayweather's fan base and supporters, how does the postponement tarnish such support due to a perceived conspiracy and Machiavellian maneuver?

Perception as Reality

In this case, I emphasize the perceptions of a fake injury from the general public rather than the confirmation of such injury by a (hopefully) objective doctor because in the age of mass media and the instant publishing of EveryMan's opinions on channels such as blogs, YouTube, and sports journals, negative perceptions themselves create a momentum of impressions and snap judgments that become ingrained in the public's awareness despite actual medical findings. And in an increasingly cynical society, circumstantial settings can plant a seed of doubt that render an instant guilty verdict in the courtroom of public opinion - fairly or otherwise.

In the words of Albert Einstein, "Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one."

Secure Solutions International published a report in 2006 that suggested that 50 - 80% of resumes can be misleading.  What is important to exctract from this finding is that managers and decision makers who are recipients of such bogus representation become increasingly skeptical and formulate mental filters in order to attempt to weed out unqualified applicants.  Society has changed as well, with various statistics and studies indicating that the volume of lies people tell has increased over the years.  Basically, lying is more pervasive in society.

  • ekim 2 years ago

of all of mayweather jr's brouhahaha and rhetorics, that scheme to postpone the fight of marquez because of rib injury is nothing but a gimmick or a ploy because they couldn't make sales of their fight.

  • kulitogpakoy 2 years ago

Gayweather is a liar. He is faking like his father. He knows that he is not a ticket attractions. His way of boxing is running and chickening. How will believe on him. Now, that he knows his status, he shoulbe very careful on his words.

  • John 2 years ago

This proves that this fight is really boring and the boxing public knows about it. Only the hardcore fans of JMM and FMJ will watch it and their numbers is just in the hundreds.

  • Ribs 2 years ago

Opps I did it again, I have a reason when I get defeat, oh I think it was fine that my ribs is broken?! opps I will do it again! have my excuse saying it was serious!?

  • charles 2 years ago

Mayweather cant accept that he is not the real draw.. its his opponent.. and it shows with marquez who is not a big draw either.. those who watch mayweather in the past only watch because they want to see mayweather get knocked out..

  • hooty 2 years ago

ooooohhhhhh....ouchhhhhhhhhhh..., my rib is,is,is damage...??camo'm, stop fooling around mayweather. you're a big liar!!! pacman will damage not only your ribs but also your ugly monkey face!!!

  • Rhey 2 years ago

They should'nt just postponed their fight.. they must cancel it since no one is interested to watch the fight and floyd should go back to retirement for good.

  • demolaylkc 2 years ago

Floyd wasnt called "Money" for nothing. There isnt enough money(tickets) 4 d fight so far , thus the postponement. Less turnout 4 PBF-MM would also mean less leverage when negotiating with pacquiao. Attaboy floyd. Nice move.

Mayweather has no one to blame but himself for all the adverse comments against him here and other fora. For all his arrogance, ill=mannered and trash-talking acts, nobody believes him anymore but himself and his fellow trash-talking and ill-mannered father. Even if it was true that he really got injured in his practice, nobody cares or nobody believes him. It would be very difficult for him to recover his credibility, and most importantly, HIS HIGH MARKETABILITY. I for one, 70-30 in favor of the Pacman would still be generous for him (Mayweather). Somebody should tell him about the story of the boy who cried wolf.

  • Jose 2 years ago

The truth is that Gayweather is NOT at all near in popularity, bankability, ability & skills to marquez. how far is his status from the pacman? twilight zone. Sabi nga nag mga pinoy LA-OS kana gayweather tapos na ang inyong maliligayang araw, you can fight but not the pacman.

  • Mr. Real 2 years ago

co-sign hooty. i can't wait to see that stupid clown being in the floor knocked out like pacquiao did to ricky hatton. yeah yeah my rips blah blah blah gtfooh with all that crap.

  • Chicago guy 2 years ago

This is what we called Golden Conspiracy of Broken Ego not a broken rib. The fight couldn't sell enough tickets to cover up the expenses. It's indicates that Floyd Jr.is not a boxing draw anymore reverse of always he said. Paying public realized already that FloydJr. is not the kind of fighter that can give an exciting fight because of his running style of fighting.

  • Chicago guy 2 years ago

This matchup is a boring because two counter puncher will wait each other to who who will execute the attack. It will be lack of action of waiting each other. If JMM will attack, Floyd Jr. will run roll his shoulder then clinch.

  • joe 2 years ago

What a joke!! I was looking forward to Marquez knock his monkey ass out..Gayweather is a joke..

  • MANG RESTY 2 years ago

If ever Floyd really suffered an injury the damage to his reputation continues to grow each day and it's unfortunate that such thing doesn't matter anymore at www.pacfans-corner.com since pacfans there are already salivating at the thought of Pacquaio getting his 7th title.

  • Chicago guy 2 years ago

If Pacquiao/Mayrunner fight happens and the latter lose by KO by Pacquiao shot to the rib,he may say an excuse because of his broken rib why he lose. Remember this Mayweather's are good excuse talker.

  • irontears 2 years ago

an early excuse or reason when he'll get knock out by pacman LOL...

  • Chicago guy 2 years ago

The father and son tandem can establish their own circus because they are much qualified to act like a real clowns.

  • obama 2 years ago

mayweather realize that pacman should be the next fight. just pay marquez a million buck for his service and negotiate with arum now. get this nov 14 deal before arum complete the cotto contract. easily it will a $15 mil for a fight with pacman plus the ppv of 2 million buys. everybody happy with this deal.

  • Kingdom 2 years ago

Listen to me Mayweather is a punk. I just read something were Bob Arum said Floyd wont fight anyone unless he knows he can beat them. Who know's if he is really hurt and who cares. The only reason why i am glad he's back so i can seem him get his ass kicked. The one thing i will give him is i have never seen anyone hurt him yet. I hope that all changes. When he fought Delahoya if i remember correctly Delahoya was the champ and to me when you fight a champ you have to take the belt away. To me Floyd barely made any effort to go after Delahoya. He is a play it safe fighter who is a bore to watch. I hate cocky fighters .I remember watching Chris Bird another cocky fighter get his ass knocked out on the ropes. I loved it. He like Floyd think that they cant get hit. Somebody will catch Floyd on the ropes and to see him hit the canvas face first will retire him for good.

  • rge_5 2 years ago

good article. to a certain extent every sport needs a villain, but history has proven if you are to continue to generate interest or prolong a career you must become good, the villain act has an expiry date which Floyd is unaware of.

regarding the survey, for the numbskulls that voted that Floyd wants to fight Manny asap, if this were true he would have waited a day to make the fight happen. but he didn't, Floyd's life story, he decided to fight a non-welterweight....surprise surprise.....

  • Ratbo 2 years ago

Sorry guys but Mayweather opted to fight Ivan Calderon instead on Sept 25 in Las Vegas or Madison Square Garden.

  • t_t_nue 2 years ago

no no..pbf didn't injured his ribs. How did that happen??? how can he????? oh yeah, maybe he tripped because he was running..he landed on his ribs..attaboy mayrunner! good excuse.

  • loyacs 2 years ago

you see what chicago guy say sr and jr are clown hik hik hik oohhh poor lil mayweather you have no more room in boxing world better go back to the cave wher you live, the boxing fan not relly interested in you in the ring to watch look you july 18 match people not buying your tickets hik hik hik hope you got that lesson idiot

  • bonsai 2 years ago

gayweather is in the wrong sport. he should just go back to dancing.

  • POGI 2 years ago

How come Floyd Badweather hurt his ribs without fighting anyone? Looks like he is scared of JMM so he postphone his fight. Badweather is no longer bankable and his credibility is very doubtful. Nobody wants to see him fight and others that would spare some of their money will buy ticket just to see his ass kicked by any opponent he would face. just a piece of advice to Badweather... stay retired retarded!

  • idiot 2 years ago

its good to see the fans know fraud is a fraud///the self proclaimed cash cow's ego is really hurting not his ribs... just when did beating a journeyman baldomir, undersized hatton, psat his prime delahyoa, and nobodies like corley and bruselles, and a shot gatti makes you a great fighter..you proclaim you are the best welterweight when the only welter you fought was a past his best zab judah and ricky moving up in weight... floyd fought the best at 130.. after that its nothing... floyd is the most overrated bitch in the planet

  • PreetyBoyFraud 2 years ago

poor ticket sales is the reason dude. i don't think PBF is immediately after a fight with pac.. he knows he'l get his ass sued by marquez and Oscar.

  • sonix 2 years ago

Sorry, Arum will not allowed gayweather to fight with the pacman. He knows that its only a joke like his father floyd Sr. He knows also that gayweather is afraid to lose especially to a big threat but small pacman. I think gayweather wanted to fight calderon instead to ensure his victory by KNOCKOUT WIN againts IVAN CALDERON. Ok let's bring it on.... "FLOYD MAYWEATHER VS. IVAN CALDERON" in Sept. 25, 2009 in MSG or Las Vegas. Hahahaha! =)

  • tosik 2 years ago

floyd should go to quack doctor to repair her damage ribs, I think she is afraid of jmm ... pity jmm and floyd

  • Mokong 2 years ago

There's a big possibility that Mayweather has postponed his fight against JMM because of poor ticket sales. A good PPV sales coupled with a boxoffice gate receipts would definitely give Mayweather the leverage in his future negotiations with Top Rank. Same as what Bob Arum did last month, withhold PPV sales of Pacquiao-Hatton fight because it did not met Arum's target.

  • mhac 2 years ago

they don't sell tickets and now he's injured. maybe he should fight the amateur ranks to ensure his victory. He can't win against calderon because he won't hit him. sorry floyd. your days are over. it's pacman rein right now.

  • moky 2 years ago

it was actually broken heart not broken rib, hehe. de la hoy hoy is behind all these, he's gonna lose a lot of money if he insists on promoting this fight.

  • gayweather republic 2 years ago

i got somethin for you floyd....fight mosley then retire again then fight pacman then retire again.LOL
