Mayweather's apology for his Pacquiao rant doesn't convince the fans of his contrition

Just days after his racially charged tirade against rival Manny Pacquiao, former pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather again took to his Ustream account, but this time to make an apology.

Obviously the fact that he is apologizing at all is a good thing, but it does beg the question of whether he is suddenly genuinely concerned about causing offense or whether he is more worried about some of his more mainstream sponsors possibly dropping him.

Already there are online petitions from fans asking for the likes of AT&T to drop Mayweather over his actions, and if he were a major star in another sport undoubtedly he would have already gotten in a lot more trouble over the remarks than he has already.

So the credibility of his apology from the offset isn't going to convince too many people, especially considering that a lot of the people he offended probably weren't his biggest fans to begin with. Even so surely a simple, full and frank apology isn't beyond him is it?

Firstly, even though the aim of the video was seemingly to apologize for his previous comments, he still felt the need to preface it by first claiming to be a better fighter than Pacquiao:

"To all the Manny Pacquiao fans, stand behind him, even one day when we meet up and, and I beat him. I want him to believe in himself and believe in his skills, and I want him to believe that he's going to win because he's supposed to believe he's going to win. All 41 opponents that I faced believed that they was gonna win, but it didn't happen and it's not gonna happen"

From then on it became apparent that a simple apology to Pacquiao and the people he offended wasn't going to be on the cards. From there he puzzlingly began talking about his family and then thanked HBO and his advisers, almost making it sound more like a retirement speech. All the while parading the different ethnicities of several of his lackeys, helpfully pointing out that one of his jewelers is Jewish.

He can't be a racist then right? He buys his jewelry from a Jewish guy!

Incidentally, a Jewish guy who judging by Mayweather's collection of gaudy diamond encrusted jewelry has probably made millions from him over the years, so probably not a credible character witness in this case anyway.

He continued:

"I do want to apologize for what happened the other night. I want to apologize to everybody because everybody thought that it was a racist comment that I said. I don't have a racist bone in my body. I have nothing but love for everybody. Some of my guys are Muslim, some of my guys are Jews. Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, whites, ...it doesn't matter. I got nothing but love in my heart. All i want to say is, if anybody was affected from what I said the other day, I apologize as a man. I was just having fun. I didn't really mean it,"

Strangely though, he didn't actually mention the groups or individuals he made offensive remarks about in his speech. No mention is made of the fact that he made offensive comments towards Manny Pacquiao, that he continually uses derogatory terms offensive to homosexuals or the fact that he made several racist remarks directed towards Asians, an ethnic group incidentally missing from his list of associates.

Ending an apology about making racist remarks by saying that he was "only having fun" was probably not the best idea either. Clearly, Floyd Mayweather is badly in need of a speechwriter.

So while he has apologized for clearly stepping over the line with his suspiciously prescient tirade, he still faces a long road back before he convinces many people that either he is genuinely sorry, or that he wasn't just trying to take attention away from Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito to begin with.

Craig Williams, Pittsburgh: "I bet Don King ripped some of that grey fuzz out of his head when he saw that video, what was he thinking? And then he makes the apology as insincere as he possible can on top of that!"

Abdul Hakim, Philly: "I read your article about Floyd Mayweather and I just wanna say he needs to do more fighting and less talking. Every time he says something he gets himself in trouble, the only good thing about him is the way he fights, he should just stay quiet between fights"

  • rfn109 1 year ago

It was obviously a selfish apology. He apologized to the Americans but not to Asians, particularly the Filipinos. He knows that the bulk of the PPV is from the U.S.

He was afraid that he was losing his fan base. And it all started with HBO's Ross Greenburg's confirmation of a Pacquiao-Mayweather negotiation. He's surely losing credibility.

Pacquiao's simple reply? "It was an uneducated message." And that's coming from a Filipino who "doesn't know to speak english".

Pacquiao, indeed, was in a class of his own - in and out of the boxing ring.

Pacman's English is much, much better than the f____-word laced and grammatically incorrect drivel coming out of Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s mouth.

  • brittanic 1 year ago

The congressman M. Pacquiao is right. People should not take Floyd seriously as he is ignoramus. Trashes formed in his tongue are trashes that come from his heart. His apology whether or not it was sincere, should not be paid any attention at all. All is chasing after the wind. Stinking garbage should be put in the incinerator as it should be properly disposed off so why give much weight on Floyd's speeches they have longed been put into Hell's fire along with his cohorts while they still live.

Funny people wanting to make a lot of money by riding along with a big hunk of garbage in the truck for disposal in the incinerator of Hell. Too bad for these guys they never learn.

  • marino 1 year ago

The reason why some if not most boxing fans hate Mayweather, is because he is disrespectful and claims too much for his self centered self.He gets the same deserving treatment from boxing fans then, because he casts a questionable shadow over all his "trashtalking" statements. He forgot that boxing isnt all about money, and forgot that its the combat where he is supposed to be in. And besides, he isnt as intelligent as he is clever. In other words, he is just a good stuntman, NOT an an actor much less, a superstar.
Mayweathers immaturity did him in, aside from his hidden cowardice.

Is there a system in the US to look at this racism? It seems to me that there is none.
For a country that has been trying to paint a picture of "equality, morality and justice", there should be a case here.

floyd have thought of defusing a bomb after it has exploded and american boxing scribes thought this is possible. wow, amazing. go on floyd, keep up the rants, nobody will take you to task for doing it and corporate america will not punish you for it. they are as much of a hypocrite as you are, no need for this fake apology, you will be rewarded monetarily for this ignorant vitriole by corporate america since it was not directed towards the blacks, jews or hispanics who had enonomic and political clout.

This spoiled rude black SHAMEWEATHER is a shameless liar and coward, his fake apology is nothing, he thinks he can fool pinoys and other boxing fans around the world for his extremely arrogant and nasty behaviour, Floyd jr. should always remember that they were once slaves in america, if not for conservative republicans, led by Pres. Abraham Lincoln then, these family of floyd would be remained slaves nowadays, don't act like a slave, act like an american, you're a disgrace and shame to the magnificient country of america.

Another irony of America's way of life!
