As our Big Gorilla up in New York so aptly put it, Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s idle hands need to get back to getting. The attention deficient Mayweather can't seem to keep his name off the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Just a few days removed from his racist and homophobic rant targeted towards his nemesis Manny Pacquiao, Mayweather is once again in the middle of some controversy after reports of alleged domestic violence coming from his babymomma Josie Harris claiming the 41-0 boxer attacked her. Mayweather was not present when the police responded Thursday morning at one of his residences in Las Vegas. The incident isn't the first time Miss Harris has reported a domestic altercation with Mayweather.
So it is I guess, how it is. While Pacquiao prepares for his November 13 clash with Antonio Margarito and juggle being a legislator and lawmaker in the Philippines, Mayweather is busy juggling being a UStream clown and a lawbreaker. And the sad part about all of this, instead of all this nonsense Mayweather is up to, he could very well be preparing right now to fight Pacquiao and give his fans together with all of the boxing fans what they truly want- a biggest fight in decades.
When will someone step in and truly give Lil' Floyd real sound advice? This is why it's dangerous to simply have 'yes men' and paid entourages around you as opposed to having real people with sensible minds that can save a man even from himself. Mayweather is a mess. Quite frankly, it's almost as if he's a kid crying out for help instead of a 33-year-old living legend, but hey, I'm no psychiatrist so I won't even try to figure out what's wrong with the guy.
What is obvious however is that Mayweather needs to get back in the ring ASAP. The Mayweathers have given a deeper meaning to the cliche` regarding boxing as a means to escape the hood. And right now, Mayweather needs his refuge; he needs a fight to occupy his mind as he's definitely shown he has too much time in his hands that lead to him doing no good.
When this whole rivalry between him and Pacquiao came about after coming back from retirement, Floyd was a revered boxing great and was on his way to going down as his era's best. Instead, as Pacquiao kept his head down and continued working and achieving feats, Mayweather settled with cashing checks and doing most of his fighting in the media with his trash talking allowing Pacquiao to overtake him as this era's best and most revered fighter.
He tried his hardest to discredit the guy, but he ended up making a bigger fool of himself. If Mayweather's legacy had some question marks before coming back from retirement, they are now coupled with exclamation points for the wrong reasons and errors he can not undo. Even his most loyal fans have lost the desire to defend him, and honestly, I don't blame them.
But just as Michael Jordan described how basketball was therapeutic to him during times when he was going through a lot, the same might hold true for Mayweather. And right now more than any time before, Mayweather's legacy needs resuscitating. And at this point, there truly is one thing left for Mayweather to accomplish: Beat Pacquiao and exorcise his demons that have haunted him since returning to the ring.
One thing's for sure though, a fight with Pacquiao isn't Mayweather's biggest fight. His biggest enemy is actually himself. Let's just hope we see Pacquiao-Mayweather first before he does indeed completely implode.
