Another week, another series of mixed message from Floyd Mayweather. Only a couple of days ago he unexpectedly revealed that his next fight is apparently taking place in Dubai, stating that he would be announcing details very soon.
The statement immediately caused a lot of speculation, kept Mayweather in the headlines, and prompted numerous fans to bombard his always active online presences with questions.
Since saying that though he has remained silent other than to give updates on his vacation activities, show off a new piece of jewelry or two and brag about his wealth. All standard stuff for wealthy young fighters, and he's far from the only one that does it. Today though he announced to the world through both his Facebook and twitter accounts:

Obviously Mayweather isn't keen on being pushed for details before he is ready, and probably before anything has been finalized either, which ordinarily would be fair enough. Undoubtedly in addition to the hundreds of messages he has received online, journalists and fans seeing him in person at his various vacation spots have probably been hounding him for answers as well.
A sampling of some of the comments left on Mayweather's facebook page by inquisitive fans:
"Did you sign the Multi-Billion Dollar fight against Matthew Hatton in Dubai yet??"
"if you think you are the greatest fighter of this era,then fight pacquiao and prove it to everyone."
"even with a divorce Tiger Woods could buy and sell you..sad isn't it?"
And so it goes on for several hundred pages. Floyd isn't without his defenders, but at the moment they are being far outweighed by angry fans who want answers, many of whom incidentally are or were big fans of his and would back him to beat any of the fighters they are demanding he should face.
In this case though it's difficult to have much sympathy for the self styled 'Money'.
After all he was the one who freely made the statement which has attracted all the interest in the first place, and when someone as famous and high profile as he is says something like that, people are going to want to know more.
It isn't as if he became famous yesterday and didn't know he would be constantly bothered, and this isn't as if this is the first time this kind of thing has happened either.
Several months ago he famously said during an interview with a charity organization that he was taking a year or two off from boxing, which similarly sparked a lot of interest and has still never really been resolved conclusively.
After making his Dubai statement though, many still doubt at this point whether anything will actually come of it. Although the coming days should serve to shed more light on what if anything is actually happening.
Today it is expected that Top Rank will announce that Antonio Margarito has received his license to box from the Texas athletic commission, and that his proposed fight against Manny Pacquiao can now be officially confirmed.
If Mayweather indeed does have a secret opponent lined up for Dubai, then what better time to make a full announcement than the same day as his main rival announces a fight that has already gotten a lot of bad press?
That is unless he actually has nothing to tell.
