Mayweather announces Cotto fight for May as an excuse for not fighting Pacquiao

Recent (click title to read): UFC's Arianny Celeste to visit the Philippines in March /  Donaire-Vazquez fight drama spills over on Twitter

Who announces a fight against someone else, and makes sure it's attached to the name of the opponent people wanted him to actually fight?

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and his groupie pom-pom boys, that's who.

According to RingTv, Mayweather obtained a one-fight, conditional license based on a 5-0 vote from a Nevada State  Athletic Commission panel. It didn't take long for Mayweather to go release a statement on his chosen internet bulletin board.

So Mayweather got his NSAC license approved on a conditional one-time basis, then immediately after, announces a fight against Puerto Rico's Miguel Cotto at 154 - Of course, not without mentioning Manny Pacquiao's name again, and issued a disclaimer that he is simply fighting Cotto because Pacquiao "never really wanted to fight him".

"I'm fighting Miguel Cotto on May 5th because Miss Pac Man is ducking me," Mayweather was quoted by his pretend media buddy who claims to be his mouth piece on the internet in a story he circulated on internet boxing forums.

I like this match for several reasons:

For one, it takes away the possibility of Pacquiao and Arum putting together another catchweight farce fight that really would have proven nothing. Pacquiao beat Cotto convincingly in 2009, and after his lackluster showing last November against Marquez, his fans want to see a great match-up against someone he hasn't already beaten, and definitely not at another catchweight. The undefeated Timothy Bradley fits that bill perfectly.

Second, it's at 154 where Cotto is more comfortable and holds a world title. Both guys are similar in size and frame, so this should be an even match-up physically.

Third, Cotto deserves a shot at trying to solve the Mayweather puzzle. It was said before that Mayweather ducked Cotto. Not anymore. This will be the biggest opportunity of Cotto's career after an impressive 2011 campaign. Well deserved.

Fourth, we don't have to talk about Pacquiao and Mayweather anymore, at least until after the fight, or unless Mayweather and his groupie media comes up with another hype job to use Pacquiao's name to promote this fight. Cotto is a big draw to himself though, which is why name-dropping Pacquiao might not be necessary for Mayweather unlike how he's done in the past.

Fifth, Mayweather and his fans can slap themselves for their claims of Pacquiao fighting his leftovers. Please, just once, slap yourself a good one, because you know fighting Cotto makes all those previous claims sound hypocritic right about now. Pacquiao utterly destroyed Cotto. Why not go for Sergio Martinez who was more than willing to fight Mayweather at 154?

Quick breakdown:

Cotto is a live dog in this one, but is too flat-footed for my liking. He can try and utilize his beautiful jabs and box with Mayweather, but I don't like his chances winning a decision that way. Mayweather is too slick, too good and too smart. Unless he tries to go toe-to-toe with Cotto and take risks to make the fight more entertaining, this will be an easy fight for Mayweather. I got Money via clear unanimous decision win.
