Maysara Winery debuted a new tasting room/event facility on October 15, 2011 at their vineyard south of McMinnville, Oregon. The massive structure features a large open bay that visitors to the opening weekend used for covered parking. Construction was still continuing in the bay, but the tasting room and event spaces are ready for visitors. Wood from oak trees on the property was used in construction of the structure.
The design features wood and river stones native to the area. Entering from the open bay, there are men's and women's restrooms with enough capacity to serve a larger event. A stairway leads to two floors of event spaces and a kitchen, with a deck overlooking the hillside.
The tasting room is entered through a separate outdoor doorway. The beautiful space has a wood bar and artwork. The tasting room is open to the public Monday through Saturday 12 pm - 5 pm, closed Sundays. Their Thanksgiving Weekend event is a delight, with delicious food paired with their wines.
Maysara Winery used biodynamic practices, with a complete absence of chemical use on the property. Moe and Flora Momtazi purchased the 532 acre abandoned wheat farm in 1997. It hadn't been treated with any chemicals for seven years at that time. By 2001, they had their first wine grape harvest.
Today, Momtazi fruit is used by several local winemakers, as well as producing the Maysara and 3 Degrees wines made by the Momtazi family. Daughter Tahmiene Momtazi is the winemaker, with her sisters Naseem and Hanna working in sales, marketing and hospitality. As Moe says, he grows the grapes and it's up to the daughters to make and sell the wine.
Maysara wines include seven pinot noirs, pinot gris, pinot blanc and rose. Their highly-rated wines and prized grapes speak well to their sustainable farming practices. Visiting the winery, you are likely to see turkeys, alpacas, and the compost piles that will return nutrients to the soil naturally.
