Mayor Slay's Integrity Questioned Over Transparency Issues

Mayor Slay, why are you hiding from transparency? Do you believe that because you have been the Mayor of St. Louis for three terms that you are above the law? Why do you wish to be the Mayor of St. Louis for a fourth term? Isn’t it time for someone with a new perspective to be Mayor of St. Louis, someone with new ideas and unquestionable integrity? History has shown that when one individual or party is in power too long that corners sometimes are cut, laws are sometimes broken, and individuals sometimes feel that they are above the law and that the end justifies the means. Mayor Slay, do you feel you don’t have to answer to the people of St. Louis, as long as you take care of your special interest and cronies? Concerned citizens of the City of St. Louis want an answer to a simple question. What happened to the $151,574.77 left in the campaign account of the Citizens for a Stronger St. Louis coalition?

Mayor Slay you took a very public role as a leader in the coalition and dispatched some of your staffers to run the campaign. You raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions and your campaign staff benefitted from these funds by being awarded with lucrative consulting contracts. Need you be reminded that the purpose of the Citizens for a Stronger St. Louis coalition was to preserve our city’s earnings tax? With that purpose successfully accomplished, what should you have done with the remaining campaign contributions?

Its’ been reported in the media that your campaign consultants set up a Missouri non-profit corporation to receive those funds, named Citizens for a Stronger St. Louis, Inc. After filing their original incorporation papers, Citizens for a Stronger St. Louis, Inc. reportedly failed to file any follow up paperwork, and was administratively dissolved by the Secretary of State’s office. Since Citizens for a Stronger St. Louis, Inc. failed to file these legally required reports, it is impossible to account for these funds. The citizens and businesses of St. Louis that donated to the Citizens for a Stronger St. Louis coalition deserve to know what happened to their contributions. These funds were donated to preserve one of our city’s most important revenue streams, and now we don’t know where that money went. With the corporation having been dissolved, these funds appear to have just disappeared, with no paper trail. The only people that can answer these questions are the Mayor’s staff. With this blatant disregard for transparency many questions can be raised and deserves honest answers.

Mayor Slay, the citizens of St. Louis are waiting for you to respond to our questions and concerns regarding the Citizens for a Stronger St. Louis coalition’s funds. Will you respond, or do you believe your three terms as Mayor of the City of St. Louis makes you above the law?
