The events of 2009, will go a long way in determining the future of Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley. Fran Spielman, City Hall Reporter for the Chicago Sun Times, lists a number of events that did not go well for Chicago's long-time Mayor.
The city's parking meter privatization fiasco drove Daley's approval rating to an all-time low -- and most of the $1.15 billion windfall was drained to fill a massive budget shortfall.
Daley's Olympic dream went up in first-round flames. Chicago learned it's losing talk-show icon Oprah Winfrey, two major trade shows at McCormick Place and the $2.5 billion deal that would have privatized Midway Airport.
One of Daley's staunchest City Council supporters was indicted after wearing a wire for more than a year. A former top mayoral aide was convicted. Another committed suicide.
In addition to the "parking meter fiasco" and that "Olympic embarrassment" and the "indictments," there will be more. It is called piling on and a talented opponent will be proficient at pointing out many other mistakes and flaws. It is just how politics works.

"Who are some of the candidates that could challenge Daley?"
Kinda refuted your own premise there at the end, huh? Who indeed?
If the citizens of New York, New Jersey, Illinois, and California continue to vote tyrants and traitors like Richard Daley into office, then they don't deserve the the freedoms, the peace, and the constitutional rights that they have voluntarily p---ed away. The lawless, criminal politicians, like Daley, are only part of the problem, in my opinion. The real problem is the people and THEIR unwillingness to elect officials who will honor and defend their cities, their country, their people, and the LAW-the U.S. Constitution, just as they swore to do. You get what you pay for.
