Mayor, media targeted by Tea Party in two protests

Local area Tea Parties on the offense

Mark Twain is oft quoted as saying “the reports of my death are greatly exaggerated” after hearing that his obituary had been quoted on the New York Journal.

The Tea Party movement might well feel the same way when reading the New York Times or similar such media.

Not so in Richmond and wider Virginia.

After weeks of media spotlight after the Occupy Wall Streeters/Mayor Jones/Audit requests by the City, the Richmond Tea Party with umbrella tea party group –Virginia Tea Party Patriots Federation – are holding two protests in downtown Richmond Wednesday.

The first protest by member groups of the Virginia Tea Party Patriots Federation starts at 1pm on Bank Street and is directed against the Virginia Associated Press and Virginia Capitol Correspondents Association for sponsoring what they call an “elites only” U.S. Senate debate at the Capitol between former governors George Allen and Timothy M. Kaine.

The Tea Party group rightly say the media are making an “egregious error of judgment”  in attempting to “pre-ordain two U.S. Senate candidates some six months before the June 12, 2012 Senate primary”..

Seven other U.S, Senate 2012 candidates were not invited to the debate being held at the Capitol on Wednesday afternoon.  Tea Party activists believe that citizens deserve to hear from all the candidates so they can make up their own minds.

“It is outrageous that the AP and VCCA think they can pick the winners of the primaries for us,” the group says.

The second protest will take place starting at 2:00 p.m. in front of Richmond City Hall.  Tea Party group members from around Virginia will be joining the Richmond Tea Party in their high-visibility protest effort to seek equal treatment under the law concerning a retaliatory tax audit when Richmond Tea Party requested an $8,543 reimbursement for past rallies.

“Mayor Dwight C. Jones’ action is an abuse of power, violation of civil rights, and violation of his oath of office,” the group said in a statement. “Tea Party activists call for Mayor Jones to cancel the audit, reimburse the Richmond Tea Party, and to resign his position.”

Several tea party representatives will deliver a copy of the U.S. Constitution to the Mayor” because he does not seem to be familiar with the document”.

Specifically the Tea Parties would like to highlight the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution which provides that "no state shall ... deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws"

The Virginia Tea Party Patriots Federation is a coalition of over 40 independent Tea Party groups that stand for fiscally responsibility, constitutionally limited government, and free markets.

The following Virginia Tea Party groups will support the dual protests Wednesday December 7th:

Chester Patriots, Constitutional Tea Party, Fauquier Tea Party, Fredericksburg Virginia Patriots, Jefferson Area Tea Party,  Just Liberty, King George Tea Party, Loudoun Patriots, Middlesex Tea Party,  Montross Tea Party, New Kent Tea Party.
