Today, July 28, 2014, Gracie Mansion is now officially the first full day that Mayor de Blasio and his family are calling Gracie Mansion home-sweet-home. According to the Associated Press the family made the final move from their Park Slope, Brooklyn home into the Manhattan mansion on Sunday, July 27, 2014, upon returning from their visit to Italy.

The family made a grand move from a lovely family home to a beautiful historic mansion.

The move began in June as de Blasio and his family prepared for their transition from their humble abode into the grand mansion overlooking the East River. In June de Blasio's wife, Chirlane McCray, noted on her blog, #FLONYC, "Moving is bittersweet, even when excited about the destination." She went on to write referencing the packing process "Imagine these family heirlooms in Gracie Mansion — the People’s House. We are bringing “home” to our new home and we are so excited about this new adventure!"

McCray shares a photo on her blog of a relished heirloom ready to adorn Gracie Mansion. Noted under the photo of her mother's sewing machine along with one above of the de Blasio children sleeping under homemade quilts reads "One of the first items we are moving to Gracie is my mother’s sewing machine table. Using this same sewing machine, I created the two quilts that Dante and Chiara are sleeping under in the photo above".

"The People's House" is now home to a New York City Mayor once again.

Rudolph Giuliani was the last Mayor to take up residence in Gracie Mansion. In 2002 when Michael Bloomberg became Mayor of New York City he chose to stay in his own comfortable home. Noted in the NYC Mansion brochure It was in 2002 that private donations served to majorly restore the mansion's interior and exterior to its "original grandeur" which "transformed Gracie Mansion into the 'People’s House' providing increased public access to the house and its collection of fine and decorative arts".

As commented in "A Brief History of Gracie Mansion" on nyc.gov, the New York Mayor's new abode overlooking the East River was built in 1799 by a prosperous merchant, Archibald Gracie, for whom the home is named. After playing a part in being part of park beginning in 1896 and then serving as the home of the Museum of the City of New York it was designated a historic house museum. City of New York authorities persuaded by the then Parks Commissioner, Robert Moses, agreed to turn the mansion into the official residence for the New York City Mayor allowing for Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia to move into the residence in 1942.

No matter what size a physical home may be as the old saying holds true "Home is where the heart is". De Blasio and his family are bringing their hearts with them to make Gracie Mansion a true family home once more.
