Mayor Cory Booker of Newark, N.J. is mourning the loss of his father today. Cary Booker died Thursday, according to USA Today reports on Oct. 10. Senior Booker died in Las Vegas at the age of 76.
The mayor’s father suffered from Parkinson’s disease and a recent heart stroke prior to his passing.
Mayor Cory Booker – who is currently campaigning for the United States Senate against Republican Steve Lonegan – has canceled campaign events since hearing the news of his father’s death.
The prominent Democratic politician is the third black mayor, serving since 2007 in the city of Newark, N.J.
In May of 2013, Mayor Booker gave the commencement speech at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. where he shared experiences with graduates, by honoring his father, Cary Booker and grandparents with immense pride, stories to never forget where all their achievements and hard work ethics came from.
According to USA Today concerning Mayor Booker’s honor to his father, "My father when I was growing up said it very simply," Booker said. "He used to look at me and say, 'Boy, don't you dare walk around here like you hit a triple, 'cause you were born on third base. You are enjoying freedoms, opportunity, technology, things that were given to you bought by the struggle and the sacrifices and the work of those who came before. ... Don't forget where you come from."
