Mayor Buckhorn announces program to promote neighborhood and civic leadership

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn announced that the City of Tampa will create a Neighborhood University program to promote and empower existing community leaders.

On Feb.22, 2013, Mayor Buckhorn released this statement. " Sustaining strong, vibrant neighborhoods requires leaders who are prepared and well versed in the community. Neighborhood University will identify and develop the next generation of Tampa's civic and community leaders." The mayor also added. "The program will nurture people who are already the eyes and ears in their neighborhoods, and give them a louder voice and their neighborhoods a brighter future."

The program will be modeled after Leadership Tampa with a purpose to educate future leaders about the City of Tampa, how it works and how to connect with other stakeholders like nonprofits working within the city. This will be a formal leadership training program for self-identified neighborhood and community leaders.

Mayor Buckhorn also announced the City of Tampa will work with and train landlords about city codes and effective property maintenance. The training program for landlords will assist in stabilizing the rental community.
