New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg met at the White House Wednesday with Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Beau Biden, the attorney general of Delaware. The subject was gun violence and the political victory by Robin Kelly in Illinois in the 2nd Illinois Congressional district.
On the subject of gun violence legislation, Mayor Bloomberg said, "I walk away pleased, optimistic, I'm not under any delusion that this is a slam dunk or that it is already in the bag. I think it is something that the time is coming. And if not now, it'll be later. The difference is there are gonna be an awful lot more people murdered between now and later."
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg also said that Robin Kelly's victory was a win for the voters. "I didn't win," he said. "It is the public that's the winner here."
“Is it a harbinger of things to come? I think so, but this is the public speaking,” he said.
"The voters of this congressional district understood that they and their children and grandchildren are at risk with guns on the streets," he said. The one who won -- who I've never met, never talked to -- she has been stand up on understanding the problem and committed to do something when she goes to Washington. And her opponent has been rated A+ by the NRA," said Bloomberg referring to Debbie Halvorson.
"If you explain to the public what the issues are ... unvarnished by a advocacy group and who stands for what and what they say they will do if they get elected," most people will vote for the candidate in favor of gun control, he added.
