The Mayhem Festival sailed through town with guns blazing and metal magnificence. It was a hot, sweaty day at the DTE Energy Music Theatre amidst a sea of black t-shirts full of metal music fanatics. With three stages full of killer heavy rock and metal it was definitely mayhem.
Bands that rocked the venue and smashed their music into our ears on the Sumerian stage were Dirtfedd, I The Breather and Upon a Burning Body.
Opening up on the Jaigermeister stage for the Detroit date of the tour was local metal mavens Know Lyfe who got to share the stage with some musical heavy weights. Bands included Betraying The Martyrs, White Chapel, Asking Alexandria,The Devil Wears Prada and Anthrax.
Anthrax actually chose to play the second stage instead of the Main stage because they wanted to 'bring the mayhem,' to their fans and they definitely accomplished that.
Setting the Main stage alight with searing guitars, heavy drums and vocals were bands As I Lay Dying, Motorhead, Slayer and Slipknot.
Motorhead played an 11 song set which included the ever popular and classics "Ace of Spades" and "Killed By Death."
Slayer set the stage on fire literally with pyrotechnics shooting flames skyward. They played with intense metal precision putting on a hell of a show for all the fans who all day long kept yelling SLAYER!!!!!! (This is a common thing at any Slayer show and sometimes even at metal shows where Slayer isn't playing people still yell out SLAYER!!!) They played a 14 song set opening with "Darkness of Christ," and on this note I must add that their stage setup including an upside down cross built from amps. Other songs that they rocked were "Seasons in the Abyss," "Angel of Death" and "Raining Blood." (See full setlist below).
Headliners Slipknot took the stage to the roaring approval of their fans and sent people into a frenzy. Even after a whole day of being out in the sun and rocking out, people were head-banging, moshing and yelling along to the songs with a crazy energy. Metal fans are a dedicated bunch. Slipknot played a 15 song set that included "Wait and Bleed," "Psychosocial" and "Disasterpiece." (See full setlist below).
It was one heck of a day at the Mayhem Festival with a full throttle barrage of in your face metal music and it rocked!
