The VEVO Unexpected Covers series features artists performing songs you would not expect them to perform. In July of this year Passion Pit performed Fun's single "Carry On" for the series, which went on to get over one million views. Prior to beginning the song Hawthrone said, "I choose this song because I think it's rare that someone so young wrote a song so great. We're going to funk it up." During Mayer Hawthrone's cover of "Royals" he performed the song in a stripped down manner with his band.
The song "Royals" is the lead single from New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde's debut studio album, "Pure Heroine". The song went on to reach No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. The album "Pure Heroine" was released in the U.S. on Sept. 30 via Republic Records.
