Tulsa defeats Houston
Taleya Mayberry has been an offensive force for Tulsa since arriving on campus from Booker T. Washington High School two years ago. Often finishing among the team’s top scorers in most games, Mayberry, reached the 1,000-point plateau in career scoring Sunday in the Golden Hurricane’s game against Houston. She was honored in a post-game presentation on the Reynolds Center floor.
How did she get there?
Mayberry scored a lay-up off the fastbreak with 8:28 left in the game.
Mayberry, who is a junior, finished with 12 points in TU’s 67-53 victory against the Cougars. The score brought her to 1,001 points. She was at 1,008 by the end of the day.
"I couldn't ask for anything more to be able to get to 1,000 points in a win," said Mayberry said, a junior guard. "I was trying to not let it get to me, but it was in the back of my head the first half. Coach Mossman told me at halftime to just keep shooting because I was getting good looks. I'm happy I was able to get the milestone today."
"I'm so excited for Taleya," Tulsa coach Matilda Mossman said. "She's certainly put in her time here at Tulsa. I think it was starting to stress her out that she hadn't exceeded (the 1,000-point mark) yet, so this should be a big load off her shoulders."
In other highlights to the game, TU (10-11 overall, 5-5 in Conference USA) played in pink jerseys to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The Hurricane also played in front of their second largest home crowd this season, with 1,008 fans in attendance.
While Mayberry, the daughter of former Arkansas standout and Tulsa native Lee Mayberry, achieved the accolade, Taylor Hooker led the team in scoring with 26 points and Chanice Scott added 11. Tiffani Cousinard led in rebounds with 12 boards.
Tulsa dominated early as it scored the first 16 points and got out to a 20-3 lead. The Cougars (2-19, 1-8) eventually got going on offense, drawing to within 24-12 at halftime and 35-27 early in the second half. But that was as close as they got. The Hurricane stretched their lead to as much as 19 points with a 57-38 advantage at the 4:30 mark in the game.
TU out-rebounded Houston, 56-39, and shot 33 percent (6-of-18) from the field and hit six three-point baskets. It also made 59 percent (17-of-29) from the free throw line.
Next for Tulsa is a trip down in Houston this coming Sunday, to meet the city’s other team, Rice, at 2 p.m.
