December 21, 2012, is a significant date on the Mayan calendar: viewed as the end of the world to some and the beginning of a new era to others.

And now, about four months out, is a good time to be making plans if you’ve discarded the first viewpoint and are ready to celebrate the beginning of a new era.

The Royal Hotels in Cancun and Playa del Carmen, operated by Real Resorts, are offering some traditional Mayan experiences to get you started off on the right foot.

“Real Resorts is pleased to honor the belief that this date marks the beginning of a period in time in which Earth and its inhabitants will undergo a positive physical and spiritual transformation,” the hotels said in a news release. “In celebration of this reawakening Real Resorts is offering new era comprehensive SPA experience at the Mayan influenced SPAzul at The ROYAL Cancun & Playa del Carmen. The four-day experience is created to indulge the senses and inspire a new earthly awareness.”

Visitors to either of the all-inclusive, adults-only, luxury resorts are being offered the ROYAL Mayan Ultimate SPA Ritual that can be added to any four-night or longer stay. The cost is $599 per person and is available through Dec. 22.

The experience is overseen by the resorts’ trained Mayan shaman and the staff at SPAzul and is aimed at relaxation and renewal.

The first day is focused on a guided Ludic Circuit of hydrotherapy and aromatherapy followed by the traditional temezcal (Mayan sweat lodge experience) and a massage. Day Two includes a Mayan foot ritual with hibiscus flower exfoliation and a Mayan mudwrap followed by a detoxifying Maya massage. A therapeutic Mayan massage and an organic Mayan facial are the focus on Day Three. The last day includes a bath in the Ludic Circuit and a massage with honey and music therapy.

The resorts in Playa del Carmen and in Cancun are both suites-only properties, each on spectacular beaches. In Cancun, the Royal in in the heart of the city’s Hotel Zone. In Playa del Carmen, the resort is just steps from the town’s bustling Fifth Avenue, filled with shops, restaurants and nightlife.
