Maya Angelou was an internationally renowned bestselling author, poet, actor, political activist, and first-year inductee into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame. She held over fifty honorary university degrees and was known throughout the world as a spokesperson for human rights, freedom, justice, and peace and has often been the first woman and/or the first African American to obtain certain job opportunities in the United States as well as in Africa. --Arkansas Enclyclopedia

A spirit whisperer has departed. Maya Angelou (1928-2014) died on May 28. She leaves behind an exemplary life marked by faith, courage and beauty. She was "Everywoman" and more. In the coming days, many will pay deserving tributes to her not only for the distinguished body of work she leaves behind, but also for the beautiful person she was. A gifted writer, poet, and essayist, Maya Angelou, opened a window into our souls. In tribute, I present excerpts from some of her most memorable and inspirational words.

Maya Angelou talks about her faith...

In a world of confusion and noise I look for the moments that help me understand who I am, where I come from and what I want to be. This Bible series brings to life the stories that have shaped our world and shaped my life. Stories that have helped me to forgive. Helped me to love. Helped me to overcome. Helped me to survive, and even do better than that, helped me to thrive.

God loves me [crying]. It still humbles me that this force that makes leaves and fleas and stars and rivers and you, loves me. Me, Maya Angelou. It's amazing. I can do anything. And do it well. Any good thing, I can do it. That's why I am who I am, yes, because God loves me and I'm amazed at it. I'm grateful for it.

I'm grateful to be a practicing Christian. I'm always amazed when people say, 'I'm a Christian.' I think, 'Already?' It's an ongoing process. You know, you keep trying. And blowing it and trying and blowing it. --- excerpted from the Christian Post

Maya Angelou talks about courage...

Well, I believed that there was a God because I was told it by my grandmother and later by other adults. But when I found that I knew not only that there was God but that I was a child of God, when I understood that, when I comprehended that, more than that, when I internalized that, ingested that, I became courageous.

I would encourage young men and women to develop courage. It's the most important of all the virtues because without courage, you can't practice any other virtue consistently. You can be anything erratically every now and again, kind, fair, true, generous, just, merciful, all of those, every now and again. But to continue to be that all of the time, day in and day out, night in and night out, you have to have courage.---excerpted from NOLA.com

Maya Angelou talks about love and life...

Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope."
Never make someone a priority when all you are to them is an option.

My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humour, and some style.

You may not control all events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them. ---excerpted from CTA News

Finally, Maya Angelou's last 'Tweet' on Twitter...

Listen to yourself and in that quietude you might hear the voice of God. ---@DrMayaAngelou

Without a doubt, I believe God placed Maya Angelou in our mist, as he did with Queen Esther, for such a time as this.
