By spoofing a line from Mel Brooks' film "Spaceballs" ...'May the Schwartz be with you'... we're in reality offering our readers a gift of music from one of America's foremost composers - Stephen Schwartz.
Goodspeed Musicals has assembled another talented cast for “Snapshots” a multi-decade musical about the trials and triumphs of love. Featuring over 20 of Stephen Schwartz’s songs from his most popular Broadway musicals, “Pippin,” “Wicked” and “Godspell,” this captivating new work was conceived by Michael Scheman and book writer David Stern. It will run from now to November 17 at The Norma Terris Theatre in Chester, CT— Goodspeed’s home for developing fresh, innovative, and original new musicals.
Billed as a romantic comedy, the show promises to use those recognizable – and not so familiar- songs to best advantage. It’s the tale of a couple who has drifted apart but discover a box of photographs which leads them to relive the memories of their past selves captured in the snapshots. With additional music and lyrics by David Crane, Seth Friedman, Marta Kaufman, Alan Menken and Charles Strouse, it’s probable that every couple will see themselves in “Snapshots.”
Featured in the cast is Karen Mason as Sue. Ms. Mason has appeared in Broadway’s “Hairspray,” “Mamma Mia!,” and “Sunset Boulevard” as well as Goodspeed’s “Heartbeats” at The Norma Terris Theatre. Opposite her will be Tony-nominated Mark Jacoby as Dan. Mark’s credits include Broadway’s “Sweeney Todd,” “Man of La Mancha,” “Ragtime,” “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Sweet Charity.” He has performed at the Goodspeed Opera House in “On The Twentieth Century.”
Susan is played by Elizabeth Stanley of Broadway’s “Million Dollar Quartet,” “Cry-Baby,” and “Company.” Daniel is played by Matthew Scott of Broadway’s “Sondheim on Sondheim” and “Jersey Boys.” In the role of Susie is Ephie Aardema’s credits include national tours of “Fiddler on the Roof” and “The Sound of Music.” Danny will be played by Dan DeLuca. (Don’t miss his video on Goodspeed Musicals Facebook page). Complete bios for all of these talented performers can be found in the playbill which you will receive when you see the show.
The famous songs and new orchestrations by Stephen Schwartz and a book by David Stern make this a not-to-be-missed show. Stephen’s many accolades include six Tony nominations (“Wicked,” “Godspell,” “Rags” and “Working”), three Oscars (Disney’s “Pocahontas” and Dreamworks’ “The Prince of Egypt”) and four Grammys (“Godspell,” “Pocahontas,” and “Wicked”). He is also no stranger to Goodspeed, in 2002 he fine-tuned his musical “The Baker’s Wife” at the Norma Terris Theatre and in 2006 he received The Goodspeed Award for Outstanding Contribution to Musical Theatre. David Stern has worked on numerous Broadway shows including “The Scottsboro Boys,” for which he received a Tony nomination.
“Snapshots” is directed by Daniel Goldstein. His work is very familiar to Goodspeed audiences having directed the current hit “Hello, Dolly!” at the Goodspeed Opera House. The set and costumes have been designed by two-time Tony nominee David Farley. Lighting Designer David Weiner has worked on numerous Broadway shows. Steve Orich, who was nominated for a Tony while working on the Broadway production of “Jersey Boys,” is the show's Orchestrator. Jason Thompson, who has worked on Broadway in “Jersey Boys” and “Dracula, the Musical,” is the Projection Designer. Music Direction is by Goodspeed veteran Adam Souza who served as Music Director for Goodspeed’s Julie Andrews directed “The Great American Mousical” and Assistant Musical Director for the Goodspeed Opera House production ”Very Good Eddie.” Sound Design is by the incredible Jay Hilton who is in his 28th season at Goodspeed. “Snapshots” is being produced for Goodspeed Musicals by Michael Price.
