May Pang has a new venture.
The music business veteran/celebrity, who recently launched the webzine May Pang’s Asian Media Internet News (AMIN) to bring Pan-Asian pop culture to mainstream America, has just started up Dinner Specials: Serving it up with May Pang and Cynthia Neilson, an Internet radio program available at blogtalkradio.com.
“I’d been a member of blogtalkradio and was seeing my friends do their own stuff--and wanted to do mine!” says Pang, who partnered with old friend Nielsen, a writer and former stuntwoman and casting director.
Pang, of course, is also a writer herself. Her most recent book Instamatic Karma—Photographs of John Lennon documents the famous two-year “lost weekend” she spent with the former Beatle in the early 1970s.
“I came up with the Dinner Specials title because I’m not just talking about The Beatles and John, but doing everything from a ‘Dear Abby’-type column to discussing UFO’s,” she continues. “We run the gamut of what we think is interesting.”
Pang’s show premiered Oct. 9—John Lennon’s birthday--with fellow music business functionary/gadabout Chris O’Dell as the first guest. O’Dell was promoting her new book Miss O'Dell: Hard Days and Long Nights with The Beatles, The Stones, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton and The Women They Loved. Also on hand were Nancy Lee Andrews, photographer/author of A Dose of Rock ‘n’ Roll and Tina Firestone, a former personal assistant to producer Richard Perry (producer of Ringo Starr’s 1973 album Ringo), who was partner with O’Dell in their music business consulting company Brains Unlimited.
“We were all in Los Angeles during that period,” says Pang. “Chris was in New York to do Good Morning America, so it was the perfect way to start my blogtalkradio show—us girls dishing about that time and reflecting back on what fun we had. I became one of the girls and Cynthia did most of the moderating.”
The second Dinner Specials installment featured Corinne Trang, “the Julia Child of Asian cuisine,” and Sopranos star Vinnie Pastore.
“We talked about tonight’s 2009 Hungerthon Kickoff Party and Concert at the Hard Rock Cafe Times Square,” says Pang. “Vinnie got his friends to drop by and it was almost like a Sopranos reunion!”
Pang hopes to do new shows every week or two.
“We haven’t found a good time slot yet, but I send out a big email blast when they happen,” she notes. “And you can always go to the blogtalkradio archive if you miss a live show.”
