May Pang on John Lennon: 'He remains the voice of reason'

We asked May Pang some questions by email about her thoughts as John Lennon's 70th birthday approaches this weekend. We thank her for taking the time to answer our questions.

Q:  What do you think John would have thought about the attention being paid to his 70th birthday?
May Pang: I think more attention is being paid to his birthday because he's not here.  If he were, there'd be some celebration, but probably not to the extent that we're seeing.

Q: Have you seen PBS' "LENNONYC" yet and, if not, do you have plans to?
May Pang: Yes I have and I've made my feelings known, particularly, the myth continues.

Q: Do you think John's media image among today's public is accurate?
May Pang: His public personna -- that of a man of peace -- is accurate.  There is so much going on today and he remains the voice of reason.

Q: What John Lennon music and/or would you like to see released?
May Pang: Could there be anything left that we haven't heard?  The "Lost Lennon Tapes" covered just about everything, I think.

Q: What did you think about the documentary "Who is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everybody Talkin' About Him?"
May Pang: This is a great movie.  You really get to really know Harry, from his traumatic childhood to his great artistry.  We can follow his road to his inevitable self-destruction, but the songs come alive again.  John Scheinfeld did an amazing job of directing and writing this documentary.  The DVD is due out at the end of October with 90 mins. of extra footage.

Q: Did you see Paul or Ringo on tour this year? What did you think?
May Pang: No I didn't.  I missed them this time around.

Q: Besides re-writing "Loving John" and your internet news service, are there other projects you've involved in?
May Pang: I have a weekly Blog Talk Radio show called "Dinner Specials With May Pang and Cynthia Neilson."  The podcast  can be download free through iTunes or listened through the archives through BTR.  I still design my Feng Shui jewelry and I'm also on the advisory board of the Amazon Conservation Team  (ACT), which received a generous donation from Julian's White Feather Foundation last year.

What a contradiction this woman presents. She says John's PUBLIC persona was one of peace...and stops short of saying what his private persona is in this interview...which she and other people have said swung wildly between nice and nasty. I admire John as an artist. I even met him a bunch of times, but I have lost a lot of respect for him as a man for the way he treated Julian and for the way he sung about treating women as equals but treated them badly.

John stopped treated women badly later in his life. He realized he made mistakes, grew up and admitted them. More then most men have ever done

Well according to May Pang, he continued his affair with her after he went back to Yoko. I would say that is treating his woman badly.

That's because he and Yoko had no sexual relationship. They had a business partnership. They were marketing a brand.

Oh, and you lived at the Dakota to know this first hand?

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

I used to live in the Dakota, next door to the Lennons, and I can assure you there were many nights I was kept awake by the sounds of loud lovemaking coming from their apartment. Surprisingly, most of these sessions occurred while Yoko was out of town......

May is a class act. Nothing else can be said about her

If only someday John's diaries would be published. Then we wouldn't have to hear what other people speculate and report as fact. There is a fascinating snippet from 1979 available of John dictating his memoirs. Find it if you can. Don't know if he ever finished the project.

There are the books by Geoffrey Giuliano and Robert Rosen that use the authors' memories to recount what was in them, but these aren't legitimate books, in my opinion.
