May is Older American Month

Older American Month, originating with a Presidential proclamation in 1963,  was ushered in with a proclamation by President Obama on April 28, 2010 declaring the month of May as a month to honor our seniors.

Among seniors age 65 and older, it is estimated that:

  • 9.1 million are military veterans
  • 56% are married and 31% are widowed
  • 79% are registered voters
  • 81% own their own homes
  • favorite types of exercise are walking, golf and swimming

Seniors are one of our greatest resources.  As former President Bush stated "Older Americans help others to understand the past, and they teach timeless lessons of courage, endurance and love.  Through their legacy of patriotism, service and responsibility,  America's seniors also unite families and communities and serve as role models for younger generations."
