In this week's new releases, we start off with the romantic drama Dear John that tells the intricate love story of a soldier and a college student. Next we have The Road, a story of a man and his son trying to survive a post-apocalyptic wilderness, where humanity is lost and all that remains are scavengers and cannibals. Lastly we have the return of the highly anticipated second season of True Blood and the faithful recreation of Fullmetal Alchemist manga series in the all new second anime adaptation, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Part 1.
Based on Nicholas Sparks' novel, Dear John is a romantic story about two lovers, Special Forces Army Sergeant John Tyree (Channing Tatum) and Savannah Curtis (Amanda Seyfried). They meet when John is home on a two-week leave from Germany and Savannah is on spring break from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. They end up falling in love when they spend time together helping Habitat for Humanity. They meet her parents (David Andrews and Mary Rachel Dudley), his reclusive father (Richard Jenkins), her neighbor Tim Wheddon (Henry Thomas) with an autistic son, Alan (Luke Benward), and her rich neighbor Randy (Scott Porter). When it is time for John to leave, they commit to a long-distance relationship and promise to write to each other until he returns after completing his enlistment.
However, following the September 11th attacks, his sense of duty wins over his desire to return to Savannah. He re-enlists and over the next 69 months, he relies on her letters to keep him going. Despite their love, they drift apart and eventually Savannah moves on, informing him by a Dear John letter, ending their relationship. Heartbroken, John decides to continue his Army career until his father's illness forces him to go home. While at home, he sees Savannah. Is there enough love left between them to rekindle their romance or is it truly over?

"I will kill anyone who touches you. Because
that's my job."
Based on the novel by Cormac McCarthy, The Road tells the tale of the struggle by a man (Viggo Mortensen) and his son (Kodi Smit-McPhee) to survive in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Civilization is non-existent and all animal and plant life has been destroyed. The sun is obscured, leaving the skies gray and the weather cold. As they struggle southward to find a warmer area, the man holds onto the memories of his wife (Charlize Theron). Food shortages and limited safe shelter forces them to face scavengers and cannibals. With only a pistol and two bullets, the man vows to protect his son, teach him self-preservation and never let him forget humanity.
