May 1 is Loyalty Day

"We're one for all and all for one, behind the man behind the gun." ---George M. Cohan

May 1 is Loyalty Day

This is dedicated to the men and women in the Armed Forces of the United States, and to their families.

In 1999, the US Senate passed the first resolution designating May as National Military Appreciation Month.

The US first observed Loyalty Day, in 1921 as Americanization Day. It is a day set aside to reaffirm loyalty to the United States and to recognize the heritage of American Freedom. Loyalty Day is defined as follows in 36 U.S.C. § 115:

Designation: May 1 is Loyalty Day.

Purpose: Loyalty Day is a special day for the reaffirmation of loyalty to the United States and for the recognition of the heritage of American freedom.

Proclamation: The President requested to issue a proclamation:

  • Inviting the people of the United States to observe Loyalty Day with appropriate ceremonies in schools and other suitable places

It was made an official holiday by the U.S. Congress on July 18, 1958. Following the passage of this law, President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed May 1, 1959 the first official observance of Loyalty Day.

In 2007, President George W. Bush issued an official proclamation of the May 1, 2007 Loyalty Day in accordance with the 1958 Congressional declaration, as have many of his predecessors:

  • Bill Clinton, proclamation May 1, 1993
  • George H. W. Bush, proclamation April 28, 1989
  • Ronald Reagan, proclamation April 14, 1981
  • Jimmy Carter, proclamation March 23, 1977
  • Gerald Ford, proclamation March 4, 1975
  • John F. Kennedy, proclamation April 18, 1963
  • Barack Obama, proclamation April 29, 2011
