HALF MOON BAY, Calif. -- If you have been wondering when the famous Mavericks surfing competition will be held, then wonder no more.

That's because, according to news stories here in San Francisco, the Mavericks Invitational surf competition will be held this Friday.

Organizers made the statement on Wednesday. They have announced that the competition, which always attracts hundreds of onlookers, will take place this Friday in Half Moon Bay.

Half Moon Bay is over an hour away from San Francisco.

"It's an incredibly exciting competition. The adrenalin really flows. And that's just for the spectators! Those massive waves can reach up to 60 feet, I have read. Even more, they can explode with such ferocity, it can be recorded on the Richter scale!" says San Francisco resident, Joshua Avon.

As for the conditions for the upcoming race, ABC 7 News in San Francisco says they look just perfect off the San Mateo County Coast.

Onlookers are expected to number around 30,000 people and it's expected that 24 surfers originating from different places around the world will participate.

So if you have been waiting to take a day off work to go and watch the event, then plan now to make it Friday this week, January 24th, 2014.

The top prize is a tidy $50,000.
