Maui’s Mala Wharf closed for two-month repair project

Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources announced this week that the boat launching ramp and adjacent concrete docks near Lahaina known as the Mala Wharf would be closed for the next two months. The Maui district Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation office has posted notices at the ramp about the closure and times.

The closure will allow the project contractor Goodfellow Bros. Inc. to demolish and replace the two existing concrete loading docks and make repairs to portions of the boat ramp, at a cost of approximately $1.1 million, the DLNR said.

The 60-day closure – until May 16, 2014 – was set after holding earlier public meetings with local boaters, the DLNR noted. And launching or retrieving of vessels will not be allowed during this time.

The contractor will install a security gate to prevent entry to the launch ramp parking area and construction staging area, from the south side of the wash-down area to the north entrance of the harbor. Silt curtains will also be installed in the water at the lower part of the launch ramp.

The DLNR advises boaters who launched their vessels from Mala before March 17 but who are unable to return due to the ramp closure should plan to come out at Maui’s Maalaea small boat harbor.

And the DLNR added, all boats that have current commercial permits for the ramp would be temporarily allowed to operate out of Lahaina small boat harbor during the Mala project.

For further information boaters are asked to call the Lahaina small boat harbor office at (808) 662-4060.
