Matthew Schuler holds the record for having the fastest chair-turn around in Voice history and yet sadly America had to say goodbye to him tonight as he was not voted through to next week's semi-finals. This was no doubt a surprise as the incredibly talented former Team Christina contestant was a highly praised singer by all four coaches this season as he belted out hits from a wide genre of artists. And who could forget his moving version of “Hallelujah”, which as Aguilera noted tonight was his “magic moment” on the show.
And magic moments are all what Schuler says he will be taking with him from his time on the show. We had the chance to speak after the live results show tonight and the Philadalphia native talked about his journey on The Voice, Coach Christina's exit words to him, who he would love to duet with and more!
What did Christina say to you after the results?
Matthew- She definitely encouraged me. Firsthand she said go home, hug your family, enjoy your holiday. And then she encouraged me by saying it's not over. It's only the beginning. She was on Star Search, she didn't win her thing. The band I sang last night, One Direction, they didn't win, and they're just killing it.
What do you think you will take from your experience on The Voice?
Matthew- Definitely a lot of memories. A lot of new family and friends. The contestants, everyone on the show, they're going to be on my life forever. I love them. Tessanne, probably going to Jamacia soon. Gotta go see her. She said Jamacia has been supporting me! She said they can't vote, but she said they've been supporting me! Which is definitely a blessing. And the experience I've gained; singing in front of millions people every week?! That's a boot camp! It's been so cool! A lot of the long nights and early mornings have been difficult but it's trained me for what it's going to be like in the music industry- because you gotta work and you gotta be on your grind. I'm excited for the future. I'm excited to continue working and to do just that. This show has blessed me a lot. It's given me invalubale experience.
What would you say has been the most valuable thing to you that you will always take with you?
Matthew- I guess just staying true to myself and singing real music; everything that means something to me. I always want to be true. I always want to be authentic with my music. Being able to sing on this show and sing songs that are every genre under the sun was so cool. It's challenged me to really connect with different ideas, but still make them a part of myself and sing them from a true authentic place for America to see. It's been a challenge but it's been so much fun because that's all I want to do. I want to be honest, I want to be true to my music and I want to touch people. I feel like music has the power to change lives. That's what it's all about. If I can be an instrument of change, I'm all about it.
If you could sing a duet with anyone, who would it be?
Matthew- It would probably be Christina. She's got an amazing voice. She's my coach! She's got a place in my heart.
Final words to your fans?
Matthew- I'm just so grateful. This show has been a platform where they can see me and see the talent I've been given. It's crazy what this show has done. I thank my fans so much for being here for me. To know it was a 1% difference in between that Voice save between me and James. That's crazy! That's a lot of support.
I know! You definitely have the fan base. And you had the fastest chair turn in history! That's something great to take with you.
Matthew- And Christina, she brought that up tonight which is just like bringing it back. Putting things in perspective, you know? Where I've come from. It's probably not going to sink in for a while; everything that's happened on this show. Everything that's happened to me. It's really set a platform for the rest of my career.
