An adorable seal pup won the attention of handsome Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey this week when the actor lectured a group of youngsters with a 20 minute brief education about leaving marine life alone reported onegreenplanet.org.
The kids were taunting the baby seal with a stick on Malibu Beach trying to get it to move. McConaughey caught the entire scene as he was surfing on Malibu Beach.
According to Hollywood News Daily, the actor, who is known to love animals, told the kids the
"seal wasn’t hurt, it was resting and sunning itself – and that young pups do this all the time while the mother seals swim close by until they are ready to re-enter the sea. After a 20-minute lecture on sea life, the kids were so anxious to get away that they didn’t even bother to ask the star to pose for a photo."
McConaughey told the kids the pup could have been easily hurt by the poking, and assured them the little guy was just fine being left alone.
Pupping season runs from March to June. The Marine Mammal Center urges people to leave all marine life alone. Most of the time, the seal mothers leave their pups for only a short period of time while they search for food.
