Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama

(“Dallas Buyers Club”)

Now that you got a Golden Globe Award, can you relax with all the body weight loss and everything?

Mac is relaxed now. The material is so good, and that’s what helped him relax. That’s what helps you relax, is when you know what you are going to do. What makes you not relaxed is when you are not sure what you are going to do. We had a great script. That was hard work but relaxing.

I got so much pleasure making the film. For it to be over, it is now a celebration time. I was asked earlier, “You were nominated tonight. Do you want to win?” I said, “Absolutely. That’s not why I’m here. But I would love to, since I’m nominated.”

So to make a film that took 20 years to get made, told no, people declined making it 86 times, to have got together with a group of people that laid skin on the ground that went without money and put up a little bit of our own money to get this made, that was one thing. But now a year later it is live to you, living, live and present and I am standing up here with an award from the Golden Globes for my performance playing Ron Woodroof, that feels like it is still amazing and as much alive as it’s ever been. That’s incredibly rewarding, especially for a film that nobody wanted to make.

Are you in sort of an acting zone, a life zone? What’s driving you now?

I honestly haven’t really backed out of myself to be a voyeur of my career. I have been choosing roles that shook my floor, that challenged me in a way where I said, “I am not sure what I am going to do with this, but I can’t wait.” I have been choosing directors an stories that I haven’t seen before and characters, men with real identities.

We have been able to identify with almost all these characters, what’s their obsession. With that, then I got my mind around it as an actor. Then no matter whatever I run into, I feel like I know they had a sequel.

I don’t know that I have a zone, but I know what turns me on. A lot of them are anti-heroes. What I have seen [are] wonderful great humans. They have not been morality tales. They have been human tales. That turns me on as well.

The combination of those things and myself being extremely, extremely more interested in life ever before. And being 44, that’s a nice thing to be able to say. That all adds to that, because my life outside of my career is extremely interesting to me and extremely enriching to me. So I am letting that also feed my work and letting my work feed my life, and if I can keep that reciprocity going, that’s where I’d like to be and remain.

Did you have a good luck charm going into tonight?

I got so many good luck charms, I don’t even know most of them. No rabbit’s foot. We were explaining to the kids what was going on tonight. Dad’s up against five other actors, and they are saying he is nominated to be one of the best performances of the year tonight.

And my son says, “I really hope you win, Papa, but you’re going to lose.” Maybe that’s my good luck charm. Now I am going to go get that son of a gun.

With such a wonderful career and you winning the award, this is a great moment. What’s the craziest tabloid rumor you have heard about yourself?

Craziest rumor, that was 12 years ago, that I had fathered two children and eloped with a woman and was living a secret life. We went and we actually got together and found that person and they had some mental trouble. So at the beginning, it was sort of funny and absurd, and then it became serious because someone was mentally ill.
