The 2014 Oscar Nominees Luncheon took place Feb. 10 at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif. Nominees gathered to have lunch, pose for photos, receive their official Academy Award nomination certificate, and do interviews. (The 86th annual Oscar ceremony takes place March 2, 2014, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. ABC has the live U.S. telecast of the show at 7 p.m. EST/4 p.m. PST.) Here is what this Oscar nominee said when doing a brief press conference interview in the Oscar Nominees Luncheon’s press room.

Nominated for:
Best Actor
(“Dallas Buyers Club”)

What are you going to do if you win? How are you going to celebrate?

Oh, I haven’t thought that far ahead. I don’t want to coup de grace anything. I’m going to celebrate no matter what. I’m already in celebration mode. I’m going to enjoy this. This is my first time nominated. And if I ever nominated again, who knows? But there will never again be another first time. And so, I’m going to enjoy this one.

What has surprised you the most about this whole experience and process of being nominate for an Oscar?

What’s surprised me the most? I might be able to answer that question after the Oscars. I chose to engage and go around supporting “Dallas Buyers Club” in this whole season. I think one of the surprising things, actually, is that we have six [Oscar] nominations for the film. Six nominations for this little film that we never thought would get made. Getting it made, we felt a huge victory in that.

And then all of a sudden, we have a real presence here in many different places. That surprised me. I remember when I read the script and when we made it, it felt like it had the potential to be something special, but as you know, there’s no guarantee. And it stuck with people — the Academy shining a light on it a huge way with those six nominations.

Other than that, the whole process, I had a good time doing it. I think that has to do with the experience that I had. Some people, I’ve heard how laborious it could be. I’ve not found it laborious. I’ve found a lot to do and places to be. I think I can talk about my experience with this guy Ron Woodroof and this film until the day I day without getting too exhausted.

You haven’t been wearing a lot of the traditional black or navy suits that men usually wear at these awards shows. Can you talk about your fashion choices during this awards season?

I have been having a good time. This season, there are a lot of opportunities to wear a lot of nice clothes, so I did say, “Let’s get some fine suits.” I found a guy out on a photo shoot, a guy named Simon, on a GQ shoot.

I said, “You know what? I like what you had laid out there. The first three things you had laid out, you’re A’s were my A’s.”

We had a long phone call. I said, “I’m going to be wearing a lot of nice clothes and suits this season. I like it to be classy, but I like to throw it off a little bit …” So that’s some of the fun I’ve been having.
