Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
This beatitude is often explained as someone who reconciles warring parties or quarreling people. That's somewhat true. The world is full of people who are wrongly or rightfully at each other's throat. And peacemakers who will help reconcile these people are hard to find.
But there is more to religious peacemaking than bringing arguing people together.
The Bible speaks of peace -- shalom-- as a state or condition where nothing is missing and nothing is broken. Jesus spoke often of giving His people peace. He also told His disciples to bring their peace into the lives of those they met.
As followers of Jesus, we are bringers of His healing, triumphant restorative peace. By bringing wholeness to the lives of others, we show that we are indeed God's true children. Many religious people often sow discord because they enter situations believing their way of doing things is the right way. They like theidea of their own power. There are others who bring discomfort into the lives of others because they feel they must change the people they meet. But God's ways are meant to reconcile the world to Himself.
