Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Matthew 5:5

What is "meekness" exactly?

Some people define meek people as people who are somewhat mushy and wimpy, folks who allow people to walk over them. But that is not true. Moses was described as "meek" and he led a bunch of very unruly rebellious people across a desert for 40 years.

So what is meekness, exactly? And why does it enable those who have it to inherit the earth? And is this inheritance before or after Jesus' return?

Meekness is self-control. It is the ability to judge carefully, to not be led by emotion, to watch one's words and and to be circumspect in one's actions. A meek person is not easily controlled. A person who is not meek flies off the handle very easily. A person who is not meek is like the button on a television or on a computer. One pushes such a button or such a person and the person responds in the way the pusher intended it. A meek person also does not rush to judgment about people or about events or things.

A meek person does not allow the wrong words to come from her mouth. Such a person --if she understands the gospel-- will speak life into situations and not speak death. A meek person will speak to mountains and not allow the mountains of life to challenge her. A meek person may seem weak to those who allow their anger or lust or desire for the worlds respect to control them. But it is truly the meek person who is powerful.
