Many Nashville music lovers have heard of Matt Wertz, who has been singing and songwriting in Music City for twelve years now. He’s played the likes of Nashville Sunday Night, and at other venerable music series and venues. He’s toured with friend Dave Barnes, and has made surprise appearances at shows by Barnes, Thad Cockrell, Drew Holcomb, and more.
But if you thought you knew Matt Wertz before, get ready to see him in a whole new light.
The Missouri native grew up in the 80’s, like so many of us did. He started taking piano lessons early in life. After years of songwriting and touring, he decided to make his new album an ode to the Top 40 hits he grew up on… songs like those by Steve Winwood, Richard Marx, or Lionel Richie.
His latest album, Heatwave, came out just last week, and its ten songs feature drum loops and guitar riffs that will take listeners back to a different era. As a visual reminder of what we loved to laugh at about the 80’s, watch the video for the first single from the album, Get to You.
Not only does the video bring a certain joy to those of us who remember the iconic looks of Cyndi Lauper and Madonna, but the tacky clothes can bring good to the Nashville community in a different way: costumes from the video are currently for sale on Etsy, with all profits benefiting the Nashville Rescue Mission.
