Ryan Gosling’s (“Gangster Squad”) directorial debut “How to Catch a Monster” hasn’t had much news lately; until now.
Bloody Disgusting (and Variety) has learned yesterday that the incredibly hot, but not amazingly talented, Eva Mendes (“Training Day”) and Matt Smith (“Doctor Who”) will be joining the cast that already includes Christina Hendricks (“Mad Men”) and Ben Mendelsohn (“The Dark Knight Rises”).
Set against the backdrop of a vanishing town, a single mother of two (Hendricks) is swept up into a dark fantasy underworld while her teenage son discovers a hidden road into an underwater city.
Mendes will play Cat, a prominent figure in the Big Bad Wolf Club, and Smith will be taking on the role of the male lead in his US acting debut.
Mendes is always hit or miss in serious movies, but she usually does pretty well in supporting roles where she gets to dress sexy, and keep people’s focus away from her acting.
I guess she adds a much needed sex appeal to what might otherwise be a dark and dreary movie, and Smith will definitely attract some of “Dr. Who’s” cult following to the theater.
The film goes into production this May.
